Introducing: The Virtual Frame
I’ve been spending a lot of time contemplating life lately, and there’s nothing like doing your taxes to help initiate that endeavor. In the process of seeing how pitiful my earnings look on paper (tax man, please don’t judge!), I noticed—to my surprise—that I was teaching less than a year ago. My academic life seems like decades ago. This thought paired with the realization that it’s been TWO WHOLE YEARS since I finished my MFA left me feeling a little…creatively starved.
Without the rigor, focus, and community of graduate school to guide me, I’m left putting much of my creative energy toward juicing green vegetables and calculating banana chip dehydration times. Fun stuff, indeed, but not quite as engaging as critically examining a work of art.
So, in the interest of having more art in my life, I am going to start a series on FMD about art and film called The Virtual Frame. The first VF post goes to this fascinating Rear Window Timelapse by Jeff Desom. It’s definitely worth a fullscreen viewing.
I have a soft spot in my heart for awesome cinematic remixes—especially Hitchcock remixes! Personally, I prefer his installation of the video on the facade of a building in Brooklyn.
Despite only experiencing it virtually, I think the video is much more effective as an installation within the context of an urban space (but I might be biased because I wrote my master’s thesis on the intersection of cinematic space-time and three-dimensional space). Artists and non-artists alike, what do you think? Let’s talk art.
