Dehydrate This

Ah, spring. We finally got the heat wave the rest of the country was basking in all week. When I last wrote two weeks ago, it was 6 degrees. Now the high is 85. After only three weeks of winter, even I can appreciate the arrival of spring. There’s something about the smell of frozen brush thawing in the warm sun that brings me back to the Easters of my youth and makes me get all cheesy and sentimental. It’s also particularly nice to experience seasonal changes again. I never thought I’d miss ‘em, but seasons offer me a sense of purpose and clarity. They mark the passage of time (something that was completely lacking during our dream-like adventure in easy, breezy Honolulu). Did that really happen? Sometimes I wonder…

It’s been a busy two weeks full of Quasimodo-esque, late-night lurking in the editing room (aka home office, but that doesn’t sound as cool); juicing, juicing, and more juicing; dishes, dishes, and more dishes; and, of course, plenty of dehydrating. Everything tastes better crunchy. Seriously.

Oh yeah, did I mention that I own a juicer and a food dehydrator now? Because I totally do. The picture above is a photo of my 10-day-old food dehydrator. We’ve been through a lot in 10 days: apple chips, banana chips, strawberry chips, candied lemons, carrot pulp crackers, and, perhaps the most addictive snack I’ve ever had, cheesy lemon kale chips (perfected recipe forthcoming).

I thought these candied lemons would make a great dessert topping, but they barely lasted long enough to take this picture.

Anyway, despite all that work being barefoot in the kitchen, I was able to edit FORTY-NINE minutes of my film into a coherent rough cut. Did you catch that? 49 minutes is, like, half a movie. No word yet on the mentorship, but it was a nice kick in the [pajama]pants (Let’s be honest. I work from home, after all.) to get things moving. Of course I haven’t worked on it in a week—there are too many fruits and vegetables begging to have the moisture sucked out of them.
