Culture Clash

The cats met each other face to face, growl to growl yesterday. Cobbles isn’t pleased to share space with the white beast, but she also isn’t pleased to be locked up in the bedroom alone. Thankfully, they have both been all talk so far in this cohabitation experiment.

Speaking of cohabiting, living here, I am surrounded by the typical American home: Pillsbury, Tupperware, Teflon, and tchotchkes abound. After reading about BPA in plastics (it is even used to line canned goods) and PFCs (most frighteningly found in non-stick cookware), I am totally freaked out about this plastic and Teflon-laden house. I am that holier-than-thou liberal dinner guest who won’t partake unless it’s organic, free-range, vegetarian, lactose-free, gluten-free, sugar-free, and cooked in a cast-iron pan (no, seriously, I am). So, armed with the solitary cast-iron pan and the handful of non-non-stick cookware available, I’m wholeheartedly planning our upcoming shift to a low-waste, healthful home. I only have one month to go.

Needless to say, despite the culinary setbakcs, the kitchen is still getting a lot of traffic.

Not-So-Ordinary Veggie Burrito (starring from left to right: homemade pineapple-cilantro salsa, black beans, quinoa, lime-heavy guacamole, and plenty of cheese)
